A small contingent of Jumblies attended our first Salty Seadog sail-a-away at Morecambe and Heysham Yacht Club where we were warmly welcomed by our hosts.  Five of our dinghies took part in an across the bay race on a sunny Sunday morning, taking advantage of a rising spring tide. The first leg was a beat to a yellow fishing boat moored off a stone jetty some 400 metres from the start line, in front of the race control hut. This was followed by a long leg right across the bay to a yellow mark laid down by the safety boat somewhere off Humphrey Head and then back across the bay to a second yellow mark, 300 metres, downwind of the start line. There followed a beat back across the start line up and around the yellow fishing boat and back across the start line to finish.

As an introduction to dinghy racing on the sea it was superb. The sea was flat, the wind was steady and the tide gave our sailors food for thought especially when trying to round the mark at Humphrey Head.

The second race was a simple triangular course of three laps. The tide for this race was ebbing which meant that the dinghies were fighting the tide on two of the legs, but had the wind abaft of the beam. However on the third leg where the tide was in favour the wind was against so it was a beat.

A big thank you to Morecambe and Heysham Yacht Club
